Sound Memories

The other night it was really warm out as a heat wave was passing through. The crickets were having a full on love fest outside. Laying there listening (not too intently or it would overwhelm me; I was listening passively) I suddenly was flooded with memories of how I’d felt in the past hearing that same sound.
The sound of crickets at night is attached to so many good memories of being out in the world. Music festivals in the country at night, camping all over the country, summer vacation as a kid traveling all over the place, time with no homework that allowed me to pursue my creative projects like legos or clay sculptures or photography or film or whatever random thing I was trying to make. That sound brought back the feeling of being outside enjoying life. It brought back the feeling of being alive. And for a moment, I was free.
