4th of July Disgrace
Accessibility: Listen to this post
I have been committed to never commenting on politics in my writing because I want us all to remain united around what is most important to all of us - ME/CFS and Long Covid. But I cannot remain quiet today.
Today is a disgrace to any American with a disability or chronic illness. Today is a disgrace to any American facing unemployment or poverty. Today is a disgrace to any American who has simply had bad luck and needs help staying alive or getting back on their feet. Today should be a disgrace to all Americans.
Today President Trump signs into law a bill that will take away healthcare from 17 million Americans, most of them on Medicaid. And it does not even save America money, it adds a projected $3 Trillion to the national debt in 10 years. It takes desperately needed healthcare away from the sick, the poor, the disabled - including veterans who fought for our country - and gives it directly to the richest people and corporations in America - by writing them a check no less. It takes money that is holding people to life by a thread, snaps that thread, and gives it to people who have spools and won’t even notice it. If you have billions, millions means nothing. If you have $30 in your bank account, Medicaid is the difference between life and death. And yes, when you take away healthcare from sick and disabled people, many of them die.
How many ME/CFS patients will lose healthcare and wind up unable to pay for their needs because of this bill? How many will wind up on the streets and die?
This is not the America I love. This is ugly and disgraceful no matter what party you belong to or who you voted for or what else you believe in. I support all ME/CFS patients no matter what your political beliefs - we are all in this together, and I mean that. But this is a disgrace and an insult to the worth of our very lives.
The 4th of July celebrates our independence from rulers who did just this to our ancestors - took money from the poor and gave it to the rich.
This 4th of July, if I could fly an American flag, it would be flown upside down. Because our country is in serious distress and has forgotten the basic tenets of this country and the American Dream.
Being disabled or too sick to work enough to pay for your basic needs comes from bad luck, nothing more. Disabled and chronically sick people are no different from anyone else. It could happen to any one of us. If we are throwing those with bad luck to the wolves we have lost our way. Especially when we do so simply to further enrich the luckiest of us.
I love this country, I feel the soil of this country in my bones. But I am not proud to be an American today. And I weep for those (possibly myself included) who will lose their lives or see everything around them fall to ruin because of boundless greed.
Love,
Whitney
